The walk was familiar, same trail, same hills, same trees, same sun, the muddy stream, the prickly bushes, the humans chatting. The scents of grouse, deer, mice and squirrels, the singing song birds and squawking crows.
The same, but different.
Your scent was there. I sniffed the pee places where you'd been. I saw your paw print in the soft mud by the stream.
We have been this way together, but not today.
I imagine your steamy hot breath and your lolling pink tongue. I see your long shapely legs that I've always envied and loved to dance with. I remember trotting behind you, wearing the fluffy white tip of your tail as a hat.
The walk today was different. I am missing you, my friend.
Happy trails to you Howie.

The Camping Trip
Exploring Jesmond Rd and Deadman-Vidette Rd
The camping trip was surprisingly snowy for a time. I was grateful for my shaggy fur coat. Forest, pines, sage, mountains, streams, lakes, meadows, ranches, rocky cliffs, waterfalls, red dirt, hoodoos, cows, bluebird, deer, horses, larkspur, coyotes, tanager, momma bear and baby. Exploration is a feast for the senses. The campfire sculpture is pleasing to the eye and to the soggy body of a tired pup.

casual
The casual life is the life for me.
Projects, schedules, deadlines,
phone, fax, email,
reports, meetings,
planning, implementing,
going, coming,
people, machines.
Human words, every one.
Fetch, chase, nap
kibble, cookies, bones,
hiking, sniffing,
outside, inside,
belly rubs, play.
Words of a pup,
living life well.

sweet
Spring flowers have arrived again. A lot of them are yellow. This one caught my eye...and my nose!
I was on a trail with the humans, when we arrived at this wetland. I was curious about the yellow spikes poking out of the mud and water. The flower is unusual and has a familiar smell. It reminds me of a smell I've noticed from a culvert in a ditch. We didn't pick any, so the vase on the kitchen table remains empty.

Howie, my hiking friend
Valleys splash and breathe,
their secrets to sniff
Ridges and peaks
are stages won
Puddles, ponds cool and quench
A trail winds up, around
holding it's promise to us,
the ones who go.

happy days
Here are my humans and the kids that I'm always talking about. When they're not on the shelf, they're full of coffee, tea or mocha.
I got my fur cut off at the "spa". They cut off my toe nails and dug around in my ears. I feel like a brand new pup!
