snowballs

From the warm comfort of the couch, it looked lovely.
Through the secure protection of the glass window, it seemed so peaceful.
At the rustling human sounds of boots and mittens, I became alert.
The satisfying click of leash to collar electrified me!
A winter walk was imminent.

It began with a quick scamper up the snow filled driveway,
a sniff at the bushes on the corner,
a dash across the road,
the fluffy flakes settling on my fur,
my paws acclimatizing.

A world of snowbanks awaited me,
with limitless smells
all needing to be sniffed.
And the snow on my muzzle and fur turned into drips
as my paws began their collection.

At the mailbox, the trouble began.
Snowball build-up.
I sat and chewed,
I used my teeth to comb.
Satisfied, we continued to walk.

Car, car, car,
the smelly things belching and noisy
forced me off the road and into the ditch.
Snowball build-up
requiring human intervention.

And the soggy flakes hit my fur and melted,
the ground all snowy and wet.
Car, car, car
Back to the ditch.
Snowball build-up.

Over and over the snowballs were removed
only to reappear
making me regret looking out the window,
making me long for the comfort of the couch,
making me a soggy doggy.
